Why this terminal exists

2026-07-142 min read#ethena #usde #risk

TL;DR

  • Synthetic dollars like USDe are **pro-cyclical**: they expand when funding is positive and contract violently when it flips.
  • On 10 October 2025, USDe supply lost ~40% in a matter of days, with stress on sUSDe loops on Aave. The fragility could have been **seen coming**.
  • BASIS shows on a single screen what the marketing does not: real multi-venue funding, reserve fund coverage, leverage concentration, ENA dilution, peg deviation — with explicit thresholds and a published methodology.

10 October 2025

That day, a market shock abruptly reversed funding. Holders of looped sUSDe on Aave saw their net carry turn against them, and the unwinding of loops fed on itself: less demand for sUSDe, yield falling, supply contracting. It is the founding event of the need — not because Ethena "failed", but because **no one was watching the right indicators at the right moment**.

The risk was not hidden: funding was compressing, DeFi concentration was rising, the peg was starting to move. It was simply scattered across ten dashboards, with no thresholds, no clean history, no regime.

The pro-cyclical thesis

Demand for USDe follows funding. In a bull market, positive funding → high sUSDe yield → everyone re-loops → supply mechanically re-expands. In a bear market, the move reverses through the same mechanics. A risk terminal must therefore be **credible in a bear market** (risk content builds the audience) and **indispensable in a bull market** (monitoring when everyone re-loops). It wins in both regimes.

What I watch

  • **Composite funding and its regime**: the CARRY → COMPRESSION shift is the first signal.
  • **DeFi concentration**: what share of supply is looped on Aave/Pendle — the fuel for a cascading unwind.
  • **Reserve fund coverage**: the cushion per dollar issued, in bps.
  • **Peg deviation**: the exit thermometer.

No advice, no "sell/unwind". Facts, thresholds, and a citable history.
